About this calculator

Every region sizes clothes differently: a UK 8 shoe is a US 9 and an EU 42; a UK dress 12 is a US 8, an EU 40 and an Italian 44; and Japan sizes shoes by the centimetre. Buying from international sites without converting is how wrong-size parcels happen. This converter covers shoes (men's and women's), shirts, jackets and suits, dresses and blouses, trousers and belts — enter the size you know in any system (or a tape measurement in cm or mm) and see the equivalent in every other system, plus the underlying body measurement in inches, centimetres and millimetres.

Because a size number alone doesn't guarantee a fit, every result also lists the relevant length dimensions for that item: internal shoe length with toe room, sleeve and body length for shirts, back and sleeve length for jackets (with Short/Regular/Long fittings), waist and hip girths for dresses, standard inside-leg and outside-leg lengths for trousers, and buckle-to-hole belt lengths — each in inches, cm and mm.

The formula

Your size → matched to the nearest standard size in that system's column → read across the table for UK, US, EU, Italy and Japan/Asia equivalents Measurement shown = the body/garment measurement behind that size (in, cm, mm)

Worked example

You wear a UK 8 men's shoe and want to order from a German shop:

  • UK 8 = US 9 = EU 42 = Japan 26.5cm
  • Foot length ≈ 10.3 in · 26.2 cm · 262 mm

Ordering from Japan instead? Ask for a 26.5.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming EU shoe sizes are the same in every European country — Italian and French shoes can run small; the EU size is a starting point, not a guarantee.
  • Using your usual size letter (M, L) across brands — letters vary far more than numbered sizes; convert the measurement instead.
  • Measuring feet in the morning — feet expand during the day, so measure in the afternoon and use the larger foot.

Frequently asked questions

Brands cut differently around the same nominal size ("vanity sizing" can vary by a full size either way). The conversion here is the standard equivalence — the brand's own chart wins for a specific garment.

Stand on paper, mark the heel and longest toe, and measure the distance in mm. Do both feet, use the longer one, and enter it as a mm measurement — the converter finds the size.

The converter matches you to the closest standard size and tells you when it rounded. Between sizes, most people size up — especially for shoes and anything fitted.

Japanese and many Asian charts size by actual measurement (cm), which is more honest than Western nominal sizes — but garments cut for Asian markets often run slimmer for a given number, so consider sizing up in fitted styles.

Assumptions & limitations

Standard international size equivalences; individual brands deviate. Women's shoe conversions use the common UK convention (US = UK + 2). Always check the seller's own size chart before ordering.

Sources & verification

  • Retailer size guides — Compiled from the published size charts of major UK retailers. Sizing is a convention, not a standard — brands differ, so treat results as a starting point
