About this calculator

A quick tool for sales, promotions and negotiations: enter the original price and the discount percentage to get the sale price and the money saved. Useful in both directions — as a buyer checking a deal, or as a seller checking what a "20% off" promotion actually costs you per sale before you run it.

The formula

Saving = Original price × (Discount ÷ 100) Sale price = Original price − Saving

Worked example

A £80 product at 25% off:

  • Saving = £80 × 0.25 = £20
  • Sale price = £60

Common mistakes

  • Stacking discounts wrongly — 20% off then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%.
  • Running a discount deeper than your margin, so every promoted sale loses money.
  • Comparing a discounted price against an inflated 'was' price rather than the market price.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the remainders: 20% then 10% off leaves 0.8 × 0.9 = 72% of the price — a 28% total discount.

A 20% discount on a product with a 40% margin halves your profit per sale — you then need double the volume to make the same money.

Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. A £60 sale price on an £80 item is a 25% discount.

Assumptions & limitations

Single discount applied once to the original price; taxes unchanged.
