How much waste to allow for building materials
Measure a floor at 18 m², buy 18 m² of flooring, and you will run out. Not because the measurement was wrong, but because rooms aren't the same shape as the materials that cover them. Every cut creates an offcut, and most offcuts can't be used. The waste allowance isn't padding — it's part of the real quantity.
Where the waste actually goes
- Perimeter cuts. Every row that meets a wall ends in a cut piece; the remainder is often unusable. Smaller rooms waste proportionally more — the perimeter is large relative to the area.
- Pattern matching. Patterned wallpaper, wood grain and large-format tiles must line up, so each cut throws away up to a full pattern repeat.
- Breakage and defects. Tiles chip, bricks arrive broken, boards have flaws. A few percent never make it onto the wall or floor.
- Mistakes. Everyone miscuts. Professionals miscut less, but they still buy spare.
- Future repairs. Dye lots and product lines change; a box of spares from the same batch is the only guaranteed colour match you'll ever have.
Working allowances by material

The two most expensive mistakes
Buying exact. Running out mid-job doesn't just cost another delivery charge — for tiles, flooring and bricks it risks a different production batch with a visibly different shade. The few pounds saved buying exact can cost a whole re-do.
Confusing coverage with area. A "2.2 m² per pack" label describes the material in the box, not the floor it will cover once cutting starts. Divide the waste-adjusted area by pack coverage, then round up to whole packs — the rounding is another reason small jobs need proportionally more.
A worked example
A 4.2 m × 3.6 m room is 15.12 m². Tiling it with 60 × 60 cm porcelain on the diagonal calls for a 15% allowance: 15.12 × 1.15 = 17.39 m². With packs covering 1.44 m² (4 tiles), that's 12.08 packs — buy 13. Buying "exact" (11 packs, 15.84 m²) would leave you roughly a pack and a half short, discovered on a Sunday afternoon with the adhesive already mixed.
